Celebrating Arbor Day

Celebrating Arbor Day

Today we are celebrating Arbor Day. It is a holiday celebrated nationwide in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska by J. Sterling Morgan. On that day an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Arbor Day has ties to Connecticut as well. Birdsey Northop of our state was responsible for organizing the holiday after visiting Japan in 1833. He also brought Arbor Day to Australia, Canada, and Europe. You can find more information on Arbor Day on the Arbor Day Foundation website.

Arbor Day is traditionally celebrated on the last day of April. The trees planted on Arbor Day show a concern for future generations. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow and, someday, provide wood products, wildlife habitat, erosion control, shelter from the wind and sun, beauty, and inspiration for ourselves and our children. Please plant a tree today to celebrate Arbor Day. It is a gift that will continue to give for generations to come.
